Renewing Library Materials

Books, music scores and curriculum materials (Juvenile, Juvenile Fiction, Texts, Teaching Resources, Kits) can be checked out by Messiah students and employees for the entire semester. No renewals for these items are permitted for Messiah students. Messiah employee library privileges allow 1 renewal option on books, scores, and curriculum items.
For both Messiah students and employees, media materials (CDs, DVDs, Audiobooks) are permitted to be checked out for 1 week with 1 renewal allowed.
Permitted renewals can be made by calling the Circulation department (x3860) or by stopping by the Circulation Desk. Additionally, Messiah students and employees may renew items online through the Murray Library catalog, provided the renewal request is initiated before the item's due date. To renew online, users must login to their library account in Primo.
Renewing Library Materials in Primo:
  • After signing into Primo, click on your name near the top right-hand corner of the window.
  • Click on "Library Card."
  • Items you currently have checked out will be located under "Loans." Click on "Renew All" or select particular items and click on "Renew Selected."
  • You will receive a message on screen that your library items have been renewed, with the new date listed by each item.

Holds

If a patron has searched for a library item in Primo that says it is not available, they may be able to place a request (hold) for it. To do so,
  • the patron needs to be logged into their Primo account to be able to request an item;
  • on the item's page in Primo, under "Find in Library," click on "Place on Hold;"
  • fill out any necessary information and click on "Send Request" when completed.
Note: library items listed in Primo that say they are "available" will not be permitted to be placed on hold. Patrons will need to come to the library and put the item from the shelf on a first-come, first-served basis.
Note: if a patron has any overdue items or fines on their account, Primo will not allow them to place a hold on an item. The patron must call or come into the library to care of these items before placing a hold request.

Fines and Fees for Messiah University Students and Employees

We expect patrons to adhere to due dates and respect the interests of other patrons who may be waiting for items to be returned. If borrowed items are not returned by the due date, they are overdue and our library online system automatically blocks the patron from checking out additional materials until overdue item(s) are returned or renewed.
Example: A book checks out for 3 weeks; its renewal period would be 3 more weeks. A compact disc checks out for 1 week; its renewal period would be 1 more week.
Fines/Fees. Murray Library materials overdue for 45 days or more are automatically marked "lost" in our library system. These items are subject to a $75 lost item replacement fee. A non-refundable processing fee of $20 is charged to the patron. Both these fees are assessed per item. This process also applies to severely damaged library materials. If a patron finds and returns the lost item in acceptable condition before a replacement copy has been ordered, the Business Office will be notified to refund the replacement fee only. All fees are subject to adjustment at the discretion of the Circulation Department.
Paying Fines and Fees:
  • Student - Students are not fined for overdue library materials. However, students are charged both a replacement and a non-refundable processing fee for items that are 45 days or more overdue and/or for items which have been lost or damaged.  Student library fines and fees are billed through the student’s business office account.”
  • Employee - Employees are not fined for overdue library materials. However, employees are charged replacement fees for items that are 45 days or more overdue and/or for items which have been lost or damaged. Employee fines and fees are billed through the employee's library account and can be paid at the Circulation Desk.
